2020 Energy Vision Summit for Green Energy to Kick off in Nov.

2020/10/14 | By CENS

The Taiwanese government has pledged to lead the effort in further developing the sustainable green economy, which is among the sectors highlighted in the Tsai administration's "5+2 Innovative Industries Initiative."

Economic Daily News is hosting the "2020 Energy Vision Summit - Green Energy 2.0" on November 11. As one of the government's core policies, improving the island's energy self-sufficiency rate is critical for the domestic economy as 98% of Taiwan's energy comes from imports. Uncertain factors, such as the pandemic impact, global politics, and trade, have highlighted the urgency for a self-sufficient island in terms of energy. Notable speakers from the industry, government, and academia sectors are slated to speak at the summit, covering topics such as the latest green energy trends in Taiwan, limiting carbon footprints, and the green business. The Economic Ministry's Bureau of Energy, Taiwan Power Company, Industrial Technology Research Institute, YFY Inc., and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners are co-hosting the forum.

Since 2016, the government has been rolling out transformation policies for its energy supply, Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua said. Long-term plans and focusing on related power infrastructure are on the table; the government plans to increase renewable energy use to 20%, gas power use to 50%, and roll back on coal power by 2025.

In the second quarter this year, the Bureau of Energy statistics shows that gas power has increased, with coal power falling back, compared to last year. Solar and wind power use have significantly increased as well, a clear indicator of Taiwan's sustainable energy future.

The government is looking to fulfill plans in five segments: enabling mature energy technologies, moving towards a cost-efficiency orientation, balanced development by stages, bolstering the overall industry and controlling power debt impact within range.
