Auto parts tooling, molds production and design with Chung Ho Cheng

2021/08/12 | By CENS | CHUNG HO CHENG ENTERPRISE CO., LTD.

Chung Ho Cheng (CHC) Enterprise Co., Ltd., equipped with over 30 years of tooling development expertise, is focused on iron, aluminum, and copper-based hot, warm and combination forging capabilities. CHC offers wide-ranging services like heat treatment and surface treatment, producing IATF16949-qualified products.

The company is a major supplier of iron, aluminum and copper forged products for hot forged parts thanks to its in-house factory, and has a focus across varied industries, including auto parts (making up around 70%), scooter parts, agriculture machinery parts, railroad parts, national defense (aerospace) parts, hardware tools, furniture, fasteners, and fire-fighting use hot forged parts.

CHC is best at developing large-sized and unique, hybrid-typed parts, while offering innovative options for their clients through expanding their machinery fleet and optimizing management. They have incorporated the German manufacturing process simulation software SIMUFACT into their systems, allowing them to improve and expand their tooling technology for more precise and faster production.

Building upon their tooling expertise, CHC Chairman Lai Han-chung said they have expanded their capacity to over 3,000 sets, and to fulfill market demands from clients, the company expanded the original factory grounds from 200-ping (661.157 square meters) to 10,500 ping (34710.744 square meters) through nine construction attempts and equipped the plant with 11 production lines.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the global manufacturing industry, the supply-demand in markets presented a notable change, as the existing procurement and supply systems were incapable of fulfilling current demands. As a result, CHC aims to resolve this through precision production of 150g-53kg various aluminum alloy, copper alloy, carbon steel forging, and alloy steel forged products.

Since 2020, both rising global prices of raw materials and turbulent currency rates have made it difficult for international trade, as many domestic companies have already fixed prices with their clients' orders. The unstable global circumstances have thus been eroding revenue and profits. To ensure a continual supply of steel materials and high-quality products for clients, CHC is also working closely with the world's sixth-largest steel mill, Taiwan Steel, receiving a quota of 300 tons of steel each month. The company is also diligent in planning ahead, as they keep 4,000 tons of raw materials in storage to meet varied production schedules, enabling them to meet their monthly production forging quota of 800 tons of steel and 300 tons of aluminum alloy.

From raw materials to tooling design and production, CHC has ensured an efficient process, while monitoring the high-quality supply demands. The company’s proactive actions and stabilizing market prices have garnered high recognition among global buyers.

Lai pointed out that regardless of the circumstances, companies will face market competition due to globalization. However, CHC has an advantage by maintaining flexibility over its order management and working with other factories together over fulfilling orders. Lai hopes to instill a cooperative environment over a competitive method. Aside from becoming the leading Taiwanese forging leader while implementing new production equipment, Lai believes they have the responsibility to take the industry’s capabilities and mold it with positive synergy. He hopes to foster similar values and share it with other companies in the same industry and create a resource-sharing environment.

CHC is currently focusing on automotive parts, especially suspension systems and steering system parts. Seeing the writing on the wall, CHC began investing in the electric vehicle parts supply chain many years ago, and has developed tooling design expertise through R&D and innovation. This enabled them to obtain EV maker Tesla’s orders. CHC also found footing in other industries, such as the aerospace sector, as another step into developing high-end product lines.

Lai said CHC can use the product images, samples, or 3D models provided by the client, and design forging embryo designs or scanning samples to create 3D files, and use CAM and CNC to process and produce the molds. Once the mold is finished, CHC will manufacture samples, sending them through a three-dimensional measuring bed to clarify whether measurements meet clients' demands. If the orders are OEM parts, CHC verifies the orders through standardized procedures for operation, inspections, failure mode analysis, and monitoring plans before obtaining approval for mass production.

The chairman also added that using SIMUFACT helps the firm analyze the process of metal usage in tooling production: from extrusion bar metal materials to completed forging products, as well as approval of entire production processes of raw material properties before forging. The streamlined process allows the firm to guarantee improvements to their cost management and utilization of raw materials, cutting back on pre-production preparation, eliminating potential issues, and most importantly, achieving on-time production and delivery. Implementing SIMUFACT into their production processes makes it easier for CHC to quickly address buyer demands.

With considerable tooling and molding development experience and understanding of material properties, CHC is capable of offering development to optimize product designs. CHC’s R&D department can offer high-precision and high-added value to their services through diversifying product manufacturing experience and applying CAE technology. The company can thus develop new auto parts and hand tools, and offer the most cost-efficient solution to help clients. CHC has done business with clients based all over the world, including the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and will continue to introduce product innovation, improve forging technologies, and strengthen production equipment management to ensure production maintains its biggest capacity.
